Each week, we spotlight a different #PowerofaJob success story.
This week’s story comes from Sunnyside where Robbie, a single dad about to lose his son, completed the Strategies for Success workshop series and gained the confidence to get a job in the field he wanted, find an apartment and keep his son. Strategies for Success is a series of classes gives people skills to get and keep a job.
Robbie came to Strategies for Success via referral from the People for People RISE program case manager. When Robbie came in for his first class, he was frustrated because he was on deadline to find housing so he could keep custody of his son—and he didn’t understand how our class could help him find a job and housing.
He had been underemployed, going from temp job to temp job for the last 10 years. He did not see how taking a class for six weeks could get him employed. He had multiple barriers, including inadequate housing, child support payments, no driver’s license and traffic fines to pay. At the end of the first day, he was still frustrated but by the end of the third day, he committed to finishing the six-week class.
When I asked him why he changed his mind, he said he had heard other students sharing their situations and saw how supportive they were to each other. He could relate to their situations.
During the rest of the classes, Robbie would be the first to class even though he was riding a mountain bike in the winter. He became more positive, welcoming other students to class each day even though he was still dealing with his hardships. Eventually, our BFET (Basic Food Employment & Training) case manager connected him with RISE (Resources to Initiate Successful Employment). By the end of the fifth week, Robbie’s license was reinstated, his case manager helped him locate an apartment and he got hired as a fertilizer applicator, driving the company truck to apply fertilizer to people’s lawns. During his last week, he joined class in the mornings and went for trainings with his new employer in the evening.
During his Strategies for Success graduation, WorkSource staff, including the supervisor, attended because they were all so proud of him. Robbie asked to speak to he could thank the program, class and classmates who’d become his friends. He also met with the supervisor and agreed to speak to the all-staff meeting to share his journey from frustration to seeing things different and understanding that sometimes we can’t do it all by ourselves and need to allow others to walk with you on journey. Thanks to his new job, he and his son moved into a new apartment in April.

Robbie vino a Estrategias para el Éxito a través del programa People for People por recomendación del gerente de su caso. Cuando Robbie vino a la primera clase, estaba frustrado porque tenía cierto plazo para encontrar vivienda como una condición para continuar con la custodia de su hijo —y no podía entender como nuestra clase le podía ayudar a encontrar trabajo y vivienda.
En los últimos 10 años, él había tenido subempleo, y de un trabajo temporal a otro. El no vio como el tomar una clase por seis semanas podía convertirlo en empleado. Él enfrentaba muchas barreras: la falta de vivienda adecuada, tener que pagar manutención de menores, sin licencia de manejo y con multas de tránsito. Cuando se terminó el primer día, él continuaba frustrado pero, para el tercer día, se comprometió a terminar la clase de seis semanas.
Cuando le pregunté qué fue lo que cambió su forma de pensar, el dijo que había oído a otros estudiante compartir su situación y vio cuanto apoyo se daban entre sí. Él podía entender esas situaciones.
Durante el resto de la clase, Robbie era el primero en la clase aun cuando para llegar, el pedaleaba en una bici de montaña siendo pleno invierno. El se volvió mas positivo, les daba la bienvenida a los otros compañeros de clase manejando sus propias dificultades. De hecho, nuestro gerente de clase BFET lo conectó con RISE. Para la quinta semana, la licencia de Robbi se reactivo, su gerente de caso le ayudó a localizar un apartamento, y lo contrataron para aplicar fertilizador, manejando la camioneta de la compañía para aplicar el fertilizador en el jardín de los clientes. En la última semana, él se unía a la clase por las mañanas y fue a capacitación por la tarde con su nuevo empleador en la tarde.
Durante la graduación de Estrategias de Éxito, el personal de WorkSource, inclusive el supervisor estuvo presente porque todos estábamos orgullosos de él. This week’s story comes from one of our own. Lyn from our Spokane Unemployment Claims Center shares her experience with a compassionate adjudicator, one of the workers who helps sort out complications with claims.
After helping her with her claim, this ESD employee encouraged her to apply for a job with our agency—she did and she’s worked here for eight years! Here’s the story in her own words:
I’ve worked for ESD’s Unemployment Insurance Claims Center for almost 8 years now after being unemployed for eight long months during the big Recession. It was one of the very few times, but the longest time, I have ever been unemployed.
I’d spent months studying the local newspaper and other resources to look for jobs, attending training sessions at my local WorkSource to learn how to better tailor my resume, sending out numerous resumes and making follow-up calls with my cell phone glued to my side but I got very few interviews and was growing discouraged.
One day, exhausted from months of stress, I called the Claims Center and made a mistake in my claim, resulting in a denial letter. I called the Claims Center in a panic, wanting to set the record straight. I needed those benefits desperately.
I spoke with an adjudicator who understood immediately what had happened and corrected the issue. I was so relieved I started lamenting about being an older worker with great experience and references but no luck finding a job after many months of looking. “Have you tried applying for a job with Washington state?” he asked. “I am an older worker and love my job.” I was skeptical. I always thought I needed a major college degree to qualify. “Not necessarily, and not always,” he said. “Just try.”
Thanks to him, I applied with ESD and got the job— and I work here to this day! It was truly an uplifting and heartwarming experience for someone, a state employee, to be so thoughtful and so encouraging to someone he didn’t even know. He is a true gem.
I recently ran across my old unemployment documentation— and discovered that adjudicator still works with ESD. Amazingly, we have worked in the same building at the Spokane Claims Center all these years. I recently told him how much he had affected my life, and in such a positive way.
I will be forever grateful for his caring and compassion for someone that he would never have expected to meet, let alone work with some day. I know I cannot be the only person he has affected in such a compassionate yet professional way. He is the prime example of our Employment Security Department employees who offer their assistance to unemployed customers who truly need help every day.

“He trabajado para el centro de reclamos por desempleo de ESD por casi ocho años, esto después de haber estado desempleada por ocho largos meses —durante la Gran Recesión. Fue una de las pocas veces que he estado desempleada, pero ha sido la más prolongada.
“Me pasé meses analizando los periódicos locales y otros recursos de búsqueda de trabajo, yendo a talleres de capacitación en el centro de trabajo local WorkSource, para aprender como dirigir mejor mi résumé y hacer las llamadas de seguimiento, con mi celular pegado a mi lado sin embargo, obtuve pocas entrevistas y me estaba desanimando.
“Un día, agotada por el estrés de varios meses registré mi reclamo y cometí un error, lo que resultó en una carta de denegación. Me entró pánico y llamé al centro de reclamos, queriendo arreglar mi record. Necesitaba esos beneficios en forma desesperada.
“Hablé con un adjudicador que de inmediato entendió lo que había pasado, y corrigió el asunto. Sentí tanto alivio y comencé a lamentar como una trabajadora como yo; de mayor edad, con mucha experiencia y buenas referencias pero, sin suerte para encontrar trabajo a pesar de muchos meses de búsqueda.
— ¿Ha tratado de solicitar trabajo con el Estado de Washington? —él preguntó.
—Yo soy un trabajador de mayor edad y me encanta mi trabajo.
Yo tenía mis dudas. Siempre pensé que para reunir los requisitos necesitaba un título académico avanzado.
—No necesariamente, y no siempre —dijo él; — solamente trate.
“Gracias a él, puse mi solicitud con ESD y obtuve el trabajo, y a la fecha !aquí estoy trabajando! En verdad fue una experiencia revitalizadora y reconfortante el que alguien, un empleado del Estado, fuera tan considerado y tan alentador con alguien a que ni siquiera conocía. —Él es una verdadera joya
“Hace poco, me topé con mis viejos documentos del desempleo, y descubrí que ese adjudicador todavía trabaja con ESD. Increíblemente, todos estos años hemos trabajado en el mismo edificio en el centro de reclamos Spokane. Recientemente, le dije a él cuánto había influido en mi vida, de una forma positiva. Por siempre estaré agradecida por su atención y compasión hacia alguien a quien él no esperaba conocer, mucho menos trabajar con algún día. Yo se, que no es posible que yo sea la única persona a quien él ha impresionado con su forma de ser tan compasiva y profesional a la vez. Él es un claro ejemplo de los empleados nuestro Departamento para la Seguridad del Empleo que ofrece ayuda a los clientes del seguro por desempleo quien verdaderamente ayuda cada día”.

This week’s story comes from Vancouver where WorkSource staff from Workforce Southwest helped a woman in the Clark County Jail learn the skills she needed to thrive upon release.
“J” came into our WorkSource site in the Clark County Jail in Vancouver. Like many others who are incarcerated, she was lacking the skills and the abilities to get past some barriers to employment. Upon release, she would have no money or prospects for herself, her partner or her children. The future looked bleak.
“J” entered our LEAP program, funded through a grant from the US Department of Labor and administered by Workforce Southwest. Through this program, “J” was able to attend classes to learn about her personality and what kinds of jobs would be a good fit for her long term. “J” also learned many other skills, like how to create a resume, set goals and shine in an interview.
She attended every class with enthusiasm. Yet with all her new found abilities, there was still a huge hurdle – upon release she needed to relocate with her family to Bothell, where she would have no transportation other than the bus system to get to work.
Thanks to the well-trained WorkSource staff, “J” learned how to navigate the WorkSourceWA.com website and discovered that she could search for jobs located within 5 miles of her future relocation site.
One cannot describe the joy that she experienced when she was able to post her well-crafted resume, receive a response, and arrange an interview all in one day from a potential employer (all while she was still incarcerated). With so many issues to deal with upon release, this was one less thing to worry about. “J” was so happy about her resume that she went around showing it to all of the staff.
“J” left us knowing that even if the job wasn’t offered, she was no longer going to be a victim of her past. While her criminal background was a good reminder of where she came, it would no longer dictate where she was would end up!
This is just one small, shining sample of the service WorkSource provides.
UPDATE: “J” went to live with her family after release. She worked with WorkSource Redmond and found a job in the local area.

Esta semana, la historia proviene de Vancouver, donde el personal de WorkSource del área suroeste, ayudó a una mujer encarcelada en el Condado Clark, a aprender las habilidades necesarias para cuando fuera cuando fuera puesta en libertad.
“J” visitó el sitio de WorkSource en la cárcel del condado Clark, en Vancouver. Como muchas otras personas encarceladas, a ella le faltaban las habilidades y destrezas para pasar los obstáculos para obtener trabajar. Cuando fue puesta en libertad, ni ella n i su familia tenía dinero o prospectos, su pareja, o sus niños. El futuro se veía sombrío.
“J” entró a nuestro programa LEAP, con fondos recibidos del Departamento de Trabajo de los Estados Unidos y administrado por la Fuerza Laboral del Suroeste [Workforce Southwest]. A través de ese programa, “J” pudo ir a clases para aprender sobre su personalidad y la clase de trabajos que serían buenos para sus metas a largo plazo. “J” también aprendió muchas otras habilidades, como cómo crear un résumé, establecer metas, y tener una buena entrevista de trabajo.
Ella participó en cada clase con entusiasmo. Aún con todas sus habilidades adquiridas, todavía había un gran obstáculo —al salir, necesitaría cambiarse con su familia a Bothell, donde para ir a trabajar no tendría transportación propia, y solo acceso el sistema de transporte público.
Gracias al personal muy capacitado de WorkSource, “J” aprendió como navegar el sitio WorkSourceWA.com y descubrir que ella podía buscar trabajos locales, en un radio de cinco millas del lugar donde se iba a vivir.
Le faltan a uno palabras para describir lo contenta que se veía cuando pudo subir su résumé bien elaborado, recibir una respuesta empleador potencial y hacer arreglos para una entrevista, todo en un solo día (mientras estaba aún encarcelada). Con tantos asuntos que tratar para su liberación, este era una cosa menos que preocuparse. “J” estaba tan feliz con su résumé que se la pasó mostrándolo a todo el personal.
“J” nos dijo que aun cuando no le ofrecieron el trabajo, ya no iba a ser la víctima de su pasado. Mientras sus antecedentes penales continuaban siendo un recordatorio del camino que tomó pero, ya no dictaría donde terminaría.
Este es solo el destello de una pequeña muestra de los servicios que WorkSource ofrece.

This week’s story comes from Calvin, a U.S. Navy veteran who served as part of ESD’s veterans team at WorkSource Spokane while he was a graduate student Washington State University then landed his dream job as a budget analyst for the U.S. Air Force.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to be part of the WorkSource veterans team these past two years. I would like to take a moment to give a special thanks to the some of the most professional and knowledgeable people who helped me during my time as a member of the WorkSource team: Hannah Schoepp, Lynda Evans, Bryan Dooley, Jack Kaplan, Seth Maier, Debbie Medlen, Mike Ramos, James Baker, Dirk Vastrick, Jeff Miller, Bill Kinyon, Vang Xiong and many others.
“I hope that my brief story illustrates the importance of both the veteran work study program and the employment services available through WorkSource. Additionally, I hope this program continues to help veteran students in the community succeed during their transition.
“In 2015, I was accepted as a graduate student at Washington State University in Spokane. As a student, I was qualified to participate in the work study program at WorkSource Spokane. During my time in the program, I learned resume writing, the interview process, completing applications and many other useful job seeking skills.
“The work I did at WorkSource was some of my most rewarding experiences. During my time there, I participated in multiple job related projects, community events, as well as assisted veterans facing various obstacles in their life. Additionally, I had the opportunity to help others in the community who needed help seeking employment. As part of the WorkSource team, I was also able to connect directly with some of the local employers, as well as participated in several hiring events in the area. After graduation, I continued to receive assistance from the WorkSource team with my career transition.
“After applying for numerous job openings on USAJOBS, I finally landed the federal position that I so wanted: a budget analyst position for the Air Force. I know that I would not have accomplished my career goal without the skills I learned and the support I received from participating in the work study program at WorkSource. I wish nothing but the best for the program and that it continues to help other veteran students succeed in life and career.”
Calvin’s new job pays more than $50,000/year.

Ahora, Calvin gana más de $50,000 al año en su nuevo trabajo.
